[netflix] Netflix CEO Reed Hastings Just Told Cable How to Beat Netflix


Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has some advice for cable networks — how he would compete if he were a traditional cable network. He told the audience at the New York Tiimes DealBook Conference earlier this month that he would expand TV Everywhere, which lets subscribers access content via the Internet. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

Time Warner pioneered TV Everywhere back when it was still a cable and entertainment company. It gave subscribers access to TBS and TNT content via streaming over the Internet in late 2009. In 2010, HBO started streaming its back catalog via HBO Go, and numerous other networks started to join in.
TV Everywhere has the potential to add real value to the traditionally bloated cable bundle. Instead of adding more channels that people don’t want to watch, cable can offer subscribers all the channels they want, wherever they want, whenever they want. That’s the Netflix model, but with newer, better, and more content.
Still, it’s unlikely networks will open up more of their content to the Internet until their hand is forced. That could come from cord cutting, but more likely from a decline in advertising rates as viewership drops. Until then, Netflix will reap the rewards as it attracts more viewer hours and continues to be able to buy up content from networks.

Increasing Competition In Online Streaming Space

We expect more than 85% of Netflix’s valuation to come from streaming subscriptions in the U.S. While the company continues to distribute its content via DVD to certain subscribers, subscriptions to its online streaming will be its primary source of revenue. Here, the company faces competition from players such as HBO, Dish, Sony in addition to Amazon and Hulu. This can impact its subscriber growth and put pressure on margins due to increases in content costs. Focus on good quality original content will differentiate players in this market and Netflix plans on tripling the number of hours of original content n 2015 compared to 2014.
International Market Is Growing But Domestic Margins Are High
A significant number of Netflix’s new subscribers came from international markets, where the total subscribers have increased from 1.9 million in 2011 to 23.3 million by the end of Q2 2015. The international segment does have a huge growth potential for the company, however it is yet to be profitable. On the other hand the domestic streaming contribution margin has increased from 14% in 2011 to nearly 30%. The international market also comes with challenges such as low Internet penetration, fewer viewing devices and lower disposable income.
